Shirley Currier found her calling in counseling through her own recovery from addiction. Thirty-four years ago, after seven years in recovery herself, she became a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor and began working in a psychiatrist’s office helping patients with substance use concerns. Early clinical work revealed to her that substance use often appears alongside other mental health and psychological challenges, and that addressing those underlying issues is essential to lasting change.

In 2000 she returned to school to earn a Masters in Clinical Psychology, building on earlier clinical experience in physician’s offices, nonprofit agencies, day treatment programs, and court diversion programs in Harris County. Her professional background spans work with offenders in diversion settings as well as community and medical environments, giving her a broad perspective on recovery and rehabilitation.

She draws on a range of therapeutic methods including cognitive-behavioral techniques, psychodynamic ideas, solution-focused strategies, and trauma recovery work. She views clients as the foremost experts on their own lives and offers her training and experience to collaborate on a practical path forward. Known for being accepting of different lifestyle choices and for a liberal perspective, she approaches each person with respect and curiosity.

She holds the credentials LPC and LMFT - Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist - and welcomes those who are ready to begin their journey toward change. She would be honored to accompany clients through that process.
